Keeping Mentally-Fit after Retirement

The best-funded statewide pension plan in Illinois assists with brain health and wellness

Oak Brook,Illinois (PR MediaRelease) July 30, 2018

The Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF), the state’s second-largest public pension plan, is helping retirees with brain stimulation after leaving their workplaces.

The “WITS Workout” workshop is a daytime, two-hour presentation from IMRF and the University of Illinois Extension Office’s Family Life Educators. Facilitators in eight different locations will highlight the benefits of keeping your mind busy long after retirement.

According to the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), “Americans 50 and older are worried about losing mental capacity.” The organization also says its research determined that that mental sharpness is a top concern with aging and that brain exercises have shown positive results.

IMRF’s retiree workshops are open to the public, but registration is required. All sessions are free of charge, and attendees may also register one companion. IMRF retirees can sign up online through Member Access and non-IMRF members can register by calling 1-800-ASK-IMRF (1-800-275-4673), Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. CST.

“This is my first year with IMRF and I am delighted about the workshops we offer for retirees. I must say that when I first heard about these sessions, I was immediately impressed,” said IMRF Executive Director Brian Collins. “These outreach efforts are great ways to stay connected with our retired public servants across Illinois.”

This year, the facilitators will show seniors how to utilize various tools to keep their minds sharp and healthy; stressing that mental fitness is just as important as physical fitness. “This workshop idea sounds so good, I might drop by a session or two for a little exercise, myself,” Collins said.

For the nearest workshop, retirees can view the full schedule with locations, on the IMRF website:

This year’s series runs from August 7 through August 30. Space is limited and reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis. This is IMRF’s eleventh year of partnership with the U of I Extension through retiree lifestyle workshops; the series collaboration began in 2008.

Headquartered in Oak Brook, IMRF is the 47th largest retirement plan in the United States and the best-funded statewide public pension plan in the state of Illinois. For 77 years, IMRF has partnered with local units of government to provide benefits for public employees. Today, those benefits include retirement, disability, and death/survivor payments. With a funded status of 92.9 percent and approximately $41.4 billion in assets, IMRF is financially-sound and sustainable. As Illinois’ second-largest pension plan, IMRF serves approximately 420,000 members in nearly 3,000 units of government, including counties, cities, towns, villages, libraries, park districts, and non-teaching personnel in local school districts. IMRF’s diversified portfolio includes domestic and international equities, fixed income, real estate, and alternative investments. The average member who retired in 2017 is receiving a monthly pension of $1857.
