Half-Time Unity Celebration; In Their Honor! Premiere

Native American Guardians Association will be holding a meeting at the University of Illinois Springfield, Public Affairs Center, Room G, on Thursday, May 16, 2019, at 1:00pm to reveal the newly proposed authentic Fighting Illini Athletics American Indian Half-Time Unity Celebration and will premiere the In Their Honor!.

Fighting Illini fans and media are invited to attend a meeting hosted by the Native American  Guardians Association to introduce a new documentary called “In Their Honor!” that explains the origins and meaning of ‘Fighting Illini’, and the incomparable Three-in-One Half-Time Tradition.  In Their Honor! includes video footage of a proposed new, authentic Pow Wow style half-time tradition called “The Unity Celebration“; it was filmed in Quaw Paw, Oklahoma, and includes eight members of Peoria Tribe of Oklahoma.

In Their Honor! and the half-time tribute to military veterans was created by Tony Ryan Henson, the Vice President of NAGA.  The “Unity Celebration” is co-sponsored by PJ Attocknie, an enrolled Peoria Tribe member, and online University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign student.  John Learned, Director of the American Indian Center of the Great Plains, who supports initiatives to restore a Native identity for Fighting Illini Athletics will also be in attendance at the meeting.

Native American Guardians’ Association has a mission to educate and not eradicate Native American facts, images and names that are being hidden from view and removed from history
indiscriminately. NAGA will fight to preserve and perpetuate Native American culture and to advance understanding by promoting the cultural value and societal contributions of Native American icons, names and imagery with dignity and respect. ###
