Real Agents and Brokers Only Way to Go

Maximize the Value of Your Health Plan

Austin,Texas (PR MediaRelease) November 17, 2016

Open enrollment under the Affordable Care Act began on November 1st.  It is a stark reminder of the value of an experienced and knowledgeable agent or broker as people buy a health insurance policy, says the president of a statewide organization of employee benefits professionals and licensed agents and brokers.

“No government web site like Healthcare.gov, nor software “app” or any other kind of technology can truly understand the complexities of today’s health insurance landscape and how it works,” says Cheryl Clark of Lubbock, president of the Texas Association of Health Underwriters.   “Today’s headlines and media reports scare people and a good agent can help people understand what these news bytes are all about.”

“It is an unfortunate fact that health insurance has become more complicated than ever.  Combine that with the fact that the federal government believes people can purchase everything from a government bureaucrat at an 800 number and the result is confusion and chaos, ultimately resulting in everyone feeling maximum frustration.”

Clark said the best news is that there are TAHU agent/brokers that are licensed specialists in health care benefits, and they are easy to find.  She said consumers can find an agent or broker through the TAHU website:

“Talk to anyone who has dealt with Healthcare.gov and you’ll hear horror stories,” the TAHU leader said.  “People are frustrated with the current process, whether it’s figuring out how to compare plans or having the IRS call them because they were given wrong information about their subsidies and now they have to repay them.”

In addition to meeting federal requirements to work with Healthcare.gov, TAHU members are experienced and knowledgeable about all facets of health plans and their benefits, especially how important the provider networks are.

“We all have to pay attention to costs,” Ms. Clark said.  “There’s so much more to selecting the best plan.  Agents are the go-to people to help a consumer figure it all out.”

She said the premiums were still higher than anyone wants.  This is due to federal health care reforms enacted in 2010, but at least the consumer who works with a licensed agent will understand what’s happening and why.

“TAHU members have been doing this for many years, day in and day out.  We are a consumer’s best friend when it comes to health plans.”

The Texas Association of Health Underwriters (TAHU) is a statewide membership association representing licensed health insurance agents, brokers, consultants and benefit professionals who serve the health insurance needs of employers and individual consumers seeking health insurance. TAHU is a state affiliate of the National Association of Health Underwriters.
