Springfield,Illinois (PR MediaRelease) March 24, 2017

St. Charles North High School, located in St. Charles, Illinois, placed first in the 35th annual Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA) High School Mock Trial Invitational held at the University of Illinois College of Law in Champaign March 11th and 12th, 2017.

Timothy Christian High School, located in Elmhurst, Illinois, came in second place and third place went to Hinsdale Central High School, located in Hinsdale, Illinois. St. Charles North High School also received the Donna E. Schechter Memorial Law Test Award for the highest team average on the written Law Test that was administered in conjunction with the Invitational. Homewood-Flossmoor High School received the first ever Civility and Professionalism Award for its members’ civility and professional conduct during the Invitational. Teams from 39 Illinois high schools traveled to Champaign to participate in the program. St. Charles North will represent Illinois at the National High School Mock Trial Championship in Hartford, Connecticut.

“The amount of hard work and preparation these students put into this challenge is very evident. The competition keeps improving and the task of selecting a state winner gets harder. However, the skills the students acquire while participating in the mock trial program will serve them well in the future, no matter what career they may choose said Marylou Kent, chair of the ISBA’s Standing Committee on Law-Related Education.”

Each team, consisting of up to ten total members, tries both sides – plaintiff and defense – of a hypothetical case developed by the ISBA’s Standing Committee on Law Related Education for the Public. This year’s case was People of the State of Illinois v. Taylor Cartwright, a criminal case in which the defendant was charged with a college student’s death and allegations of hazing.
The High School Mock Trial Invitational has been conducted each year since 1982 by the ISBA to provide Illinois high school students an interesting and challenging way to gain insight into the American judicial system and to develop skills such as critical thinking, public speaking, and teamwork. The 2017 event was co-sponsored by Illinois LEARN, Inc., co-administered by the undergraduate Illinois Trial Team of the University of Illinois, and held at the University of Illinois College of Law.

The Illinois State Bar Association is a voluntary organization of 33,000 members that provides professional services to Illinois lawyers and education and services to the public. For more information, visit
