The Texas Hemp Growers Association is the Texas Farmer’s ally in the upcoming industrial hemp business.
Farmers across the country have joined the boom as industrial hemp takes on new life as a viable row crop in a number of markets. While it’s not yet legal here in Texas, farmers across the state are getting ready. One group, the Texas Hemp Growers Association (THGA), is taking the lead and making sure that farmers and producers are being supplied with accurate information about the economic, agronomic, and legal realities awaiting them.
The Director of the Texas Hemp Growers Association, Tillery Timmons- Sims, emphasized the importance of local leadership. “We’re all Texas farmers – some of us 3 rd and 4 th generation – who have farmed all types of row crops. There are a lot of voices out there right now as hemp regulations are being drafted, and we want producers to know that there’s a group out there working for them right here, right now.” Some of the specific goals of the THGA include supporting the development of infrastructure, connecting growers to resources and markets, and engaging governments and businesses in the promotion of industrial hemp as a valuable resource.
One thing THGA makes clear is that they have no interest in legalizing marijuana. Hemp and marijuana are genetically distinct by use, chemical composition, and production practices 1 . Industrial hemp can be used in everything from cosmetics and nutritional supplements to fabric, paper goods, printing ink, fuel, construction materials, and animal feed. “We’re working out ways to farm a crop that has a lot of opportunity for us,“ said Seagraves, TX farmer Delmon Ellison. “It’s probably not a golden ticket, but we are in a big state that’s big on production. There are a lot of good reasons for us to take the lead on making sure it’s an option farmers can try if they want to.”
Membership in the THGA is open to farmers, businesses, and individuals interested in promoting the utility of industrial hemp in Texas. Visit www.txhempgrowersassociation.com to learn more.
